Life insurance

The Swiss Army knife of wealth management. A tax-advantaged wrapper for building capital, drawing income and passing on wealth.

What is it for?

Building capital within a favourable tax framework, preparing medium- to long-term projects, and optimising wealth transfer outside the estate (152 500 € per designated beneficiary for premiums paid before age 70).

Advantages

Reduced taxation after 8 years: allowance of 4 600 € / 9 200 € for a couple, then 7,5 %
Highly favourable transfer of wealth outside the estate
Flexibility: partial withdrawals, policy advances, fund switches
Diversification across euro funds and unit-linked investments

Drawbacks

Tax penalty on withdrawals made before 8 years
Structurally declining returns on euro funds
Risk of capital loss on unit-linked investments
Entry and management fees to be negotiated

Retirement Savings Plan (PER)

The number-one tax lever for high earners. Immediate tax savings, with a lump sum or annuity at retirement.

What is it for?

Preparing for retirement while reducing your income tax. Particularly relevant for marginal tax rates of 30 %, 41 % and 45 %. Funds can be taken as a lump sum, an annuity or a combination of both.

Advantages

Contributions deductible from your taxable income
Tax leverage proportional to your marginal tax rate
Full lump-sum withdrawal possible
Early release cases: purchase of main residence, life accidents

Drawbacks

Funds locked until retirement (with limited exceptions)
Lump sum taxed at the progressive scale on exit (clawing back the upfront tax advantage)
Capital gains subject to the 30 % flat tax (PFU)
Less effective if your current marginal tax rate is low

A powerful wrapper for investing in European equities with reduced taxation after 5 years.

What is it for?

Building a long-term equity portfolio. Contribution cap of 150 000 € (225 000 € with a PEA-PME). After 5 years, capital gains are exempt from income tax (17,2 % social levies only).

Advantages

Income tax exemption after 5 years (social levies only)
Tax-free exit as a life annuity
Access to European markets via funds / ETFs / direct holdings
No cap on capital gains

Drawbacks

Universe limited to eligible European equities
Any withdrawal before 5 years closes the plan
High risk of capital loss
Cap of 150 000 € (225 000 € with PEA-PME)

Capitalisation contract

The transferable cousin of life insurance. Ideal for gifting during your lifetime while retaining the long-term tax benefits.

What is it for?

Building capital like a life insurance policy, but with the ability to be gifted or split into bare ownership and usufruct while retaining the contract's tax seniority. Relevant for early wealth transfer and for legal entities (holding companies).

Advantages

Same taxation as life insurance after 8 years
Transferable by gift (tax seniority preserved)
Ownership can be split (bare ownership / usufruct)
Available to legal entities (companies)

Drawbacks

No specific inheritance advantage on death
Included in the standard estate
Fees similar to life insurance
Less universal than life insurance for private individuals

Madelin / PER TNS

The flagship scheme for the self-employed to prepare for retirement with a powerful tax advantage.

What is it for?

Reserved for the self-employed (majority company directors, liberal professions, artisans, retailers). Contributions are deducted from professional profits (BIC, BNC, BA categories) — hence a stronger tax effect than the individual PER for high professional incomes.

Advantages

Deduction from professional profits
Very high ceiling: up to ~85 000 €/year for high earners
Snowball effect over 20-30 years
Lump-sum exit now possible (PACTE law)

Drawbacks

Historically, exit mostly as an annuity
Capital locked until retirement
Taxed on exit
Reserved for the self-employed

Ordinary securities account (CTO)

The wrapper with no cap and no geographic restrictions. Total freedom for informed investors.

What is it for?

Investing freely across all global markets and all instruments (equities, bonds, ETFs, derivatives). No cap, but heavier taxation: the 30 % flat tax (PFU) on dividends and capital gains.

Advantages

No contribution cap
Global investment universe
Full liquidity
Compatible with a family holding company

Drawbacks

Flat tax (PFU) of 30 % on dividends and capital gains
No specific tax advantage
Included in the standard estate
Best combined with other wrappers for optimisation

FCPI / FIP

French venture capital with an immediate tax reduction. To be approached with a long-term view and an appetite for risk.

What is it for?

Financing innovation (FCPI) or the regional economy (FIP) through managed funds. In return, you receive an income tax reduction of 18 to 25 %, capped at 12 000 € (24 000 € for a couple).

Advantages

Income tax reduction of 18 to 25 % of the amount invested
Capital gains exempt from income tax (social levies only) on exit
Diversification into unlisted SMEs
Support for the real French economy

Drawbacks

Funds locked for 7 to 10 years
High risk of capital loss
High management fees
Historically modest average performance

Girardin industriel

The most profitable one-shot scheme for wiping out your income tax. An immediate reduction greater than the capital invested, in exchange for genuine risk.

What is it for?

You finance industrial equipment operated by an SME in France's overseas territories (DOM, COM). In return, the following year you receive a tax reduction greater than your outlay — typically 110 to 118 % of the amount contributed. The net gain is the difference. No capital is returned: it is an investment made "at a loss" whose profitability comes solely from the tax reduction.

Advantages

One-shot return of 10 to 18 % over 12 months
Increased tax-shelter ceiling: up to 18 000 € of reduction/year
Support for the overseas economy
No long-term lock-up (5-year administrative holding period only)

Points to watch

Tax risk: possible clawback if the operator breaches the conditions (5 years)
No return of capital and no income
Operator selection is critical (quality of accreditation, solvency)
Ineffective if your tax liability is insufficient
